<br />
It's that time of year again! Tomorrow I head south towards Philadelphia and Valley Forge for the 2014 MFCA show. This annual event is the premier miniature figure show in the country in my opinion and artists from all over the world attend and show their brilliant work. I always look forward to seeing so many of my old and new friends and meeting new artists who come for the first time. Something wonderful can always be found in the vendor area, from bases to books, militaria to figures and flats.<br />
<br />
This year I will be posting photos each day from the show on my Facebook Wall and once home on Sunday I will post some of the best here on my blog. I hope to see many of you there so stay tuned to see what surprises this year's event brings.Jim Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16438301280047530384noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800207394591596283.post-8211599175270779882014-05-04T09:55:00.001-04:002014-05-04T09:55:43.076-04:00The Battle of Strasbourg - Update #1<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Although these pictures are a few months old I wanted to post an update on the SBS for this vignette I have been working on. If you saw my first post you will remember that this will be a two figure vignette, one on foot and one mounted. Progress has been slow but this where we stand at the moment.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I began by painting the horse a basic mix of Mars Black and Burnt Umber. The armor was given an initial wash of Burnt Umber followed by a second wash of Burnt Umber with a bit of Mars Black added. The groundwork was given initial washes of Burnt Umber and Greenish Umber.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jr-VrbkoRLs/U2ZCsACCeLI/AAAAAAAAC40/NdshYQUWuXs/s1600/SR43-69-08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jr-VrbkoRLs/U2ZCsACCeLI/AAAAAAAAC40/NdshYQUWuXs/s1600/SR43-69-08.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
All of the leather was then painted with a mixture of Mars Brown and a touch of Yellow Ochre. The armor was lightly washed with Mars Black to further bring out the detail of the various plates.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MTlp4U4aZTc/U2ZCur2Ik1I/AAAAAAAAC48/tWrl7sxI2-I/s1600/SR43-69-09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MTlp4U4aZTc/U2ZCur2Ik1I/AAAAAAAAC48/tWrl7sxI2-I/s1600/SR43-69-09.jpg" height="337" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sg6xCVtDZZ4/U2ZC0oiWEkI/AAAAAAAAC5M/GlceCO9dTEo/s1600/SR43-69-11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Sg6xCVtDZZ4/U2ZC0oiWEkI/AAAAAAAAC5M/GlceCO9dTEo/s1600/SR43-69-11.jpg" height="320" width="210" /></a></div>
<br />
The next step was to apply a thin wash of Burnt Umber to all of the leather. This ages the leather, tones down the bright base color and begins to pop out the stitching details. I have also applied some brown glazes to the horse to "warm" the tone a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

All of this work is designed to give a broad feel to the look of the horse and his armor. details will now begin to picked out and cleaned up. The armor plates will be NMM on these figures. A lot of my time has been taken up recently with experimentation using acrylics. This piece will be a mixture of both oils and acrylics as I try to hone some of my skills with the new medium. Cloth will be acrylic but the flesh and armor will all be oils. I have attached the rider's legs to the horse and my next post will show progress on him and the foot figure.Jim Johnstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16438301280047530384noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6800207394591596283.post-31341934311267455182014-03-29T23:15:00.000-04:002014-03-29T23:15:00.071-04:00Something is wrong with George! <br />
<br />
Something didn't feel right about George! I'm a professional and whether I'm painting for myself or doing a commission, it's gotta be right for somebody.<br />
<br />
Well after talking with Mike at Michael Miniatures we agree that the bust needs something more. As I said before, this kit is meant to depict George as President. In an effort to make him more "civilian" in appearance I left the colors a bit monotone (blue) and we both agreed the bust needed something more. Thanks to the fact that this is really Mike's kit and that I am painting the box art for him, we were able to determine something that will add interest, a bit of pop and hopefully help people to want this kit even more. George has been depicted wearing the standard blue overcoat but with a red/scarlet lining that carries over to the collar as it folds over the shoulders. This harks back to his Generals coat and really makes this a more appealing paint job.<br />
<br />

<br />
Well, I have completed this wonderful new portrait bust of President George Washington, an upcoming release from Michael Miniatures and sculpted by Matt Springer. I feel this is quite an accomplishment for me as it marks my first use of acrylics on a miniature. I have been a dedicated and avowed user of oils for over 33 years but except for the face this miniature is all Vallejo acrylics. The experience had it's up and down moments but by the time I was done I had gone a long way to nailing down consistency of paint and how much load should be on the brush.<br />
<br />
So much fun and the fastest piece I've ever done. I'm all excited and ready to start the next bust. I'm not sure I'm ready to use acrylics on a 54mm figure yet but we shall see. Enjoy, and more importantly buy one of these busts when they hit the market!<br />

<br />
A bit of a surprise here! I am happy to show my progress on a new bust by Matt Springer and soon to be released as part of the Michael Miniatures line. The bust depicts George in his later years as President of the United States. I delayed talking about or showing any pictures until I felt comfortable with the direction it was going.<br />

<br />
The base color was Burnt Sienna pure from the tube with highlights being built using my usual Titanium White and Cadmium Yellow Medium. Burnt Umber shadows and Alizarin Crimson for the lips and thinned to represent the prominent crimson cheeks found in all of the contemporary portraits.<br />

The photo above shows my bench as it typically looks with the paper palette showing oil colors used to this point. The photo below shows a bit of surprise for those that know my medium. If you have been observant to this point you would have noticed that the bust is primed black from the neck down. You will also have noticed that the drawer below is full of Vallejo acrylics. My plan is to paint the clothing in acrylics so stay tuned and hope for the best!<br />

I really enjoyed painting this piece and I hope it shows. My intention was to balance the realistic appearance of the Gorilla with the fantasy aspects of Raffa's brilliant sculpt. Hopefully that has been achieved.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A few refinements on this wonderful bust to share. The face is near completion with further highlights, hair painted and the eyes further refined. I have to say that I'm not totally thrilled with the eyes. From some angles they look great, while from others they aren't quite right.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Except for the armor plate that goes on his right shoulder and some final "hot-spot" details, Tribe Chief Morrow is nearing completion. Frankly I had forgotten about the extra armor piece until last night and had nearly marked this one as complete. As always looking close-up at the photographs shows me the last few details that need attention. This piece was a joy to paint so thanks goes to Raffa for a bit of something different on my bench.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This is the second of four projects currently in process on the bench, one of two busts by the very lovely and equally talented Anastasiya Podorozhna. I am in the process of blocking in my basic colors at this point with any shading (other than the face) being purely rudimentary mid-tones. The face is about 75% complete.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I know it has been a long time since my last post. Honestly I went for a couple of months with no work done at all. Between dealing with the passing of my mother and learning how to use new photo software and a new laptop (I went from a PC to a Mac Pro-book), I have been slow. Hopefully this post makes up for that.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">One of my current projects is "Tribe Chief Morrow" a great little resin bust from Forged Monkey and the talented hands of Raffa Picca. Yes folks I do like fantasy and Sci-Fi subjects and this one is great one.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tcD1EfMaHUI/UuVWxfi35eI/AAAAAAAACtQ/yYazY70SUPw/s1600/Gorilla01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tcD1EfMaHUI/UuVWxfi35eI/AAAAAAAACtQ/yYazY70SUPw/s1600/Gorilla01.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After spending some time looking at photos of actual gorillas on the internet I noticed that what we assume to be basically black animals have a broad range of color variation that includes a lot of reddish brown. This is where I chose to start, by applying a base of Mars Brown and removing the excess to leave a warm base tone to build upon.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goeHILnu6zQ/UuVWz4geJEI/AAAAAAAACtg/aL-FcA1TA7M/s1600/Gorilla03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goeHILnu6zQ/UuVWz4geJEI/AAAAAAAACtg/aL-FcA1TA7M/s1600/Gorilla03.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One dry a wash of Burnt Umber was applied to further develop shadow tones. My painting style has slowly changed to the point that I use lots of initial washes to build tonal value, contrast and identify good color choices (harmony).</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Mars Black was applied as a glaze, being worked into the shadow areas more heavily. My goal is a basically black gorilla that isn't really black. The warm tones are strong now but experience tells me that as I apply neutral highlights to the fur the brown will diminish and the black will become a stronger value.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The last areas that have been worked on to this point are the horns on the helmet and the eyes. The horns are a wet-on-wet gradation from off-white to Mars Brown to Mars Black. This is only a base for further work. Gorilla eyes are interesting. They are basically a strong Orange Brown with Black Iris and reddish whites barely visible. This one is fun!!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This is just one of about four different projects I am currently working on so stay tuned.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Well, he is done. After more tweaking of the helmet details, crest, beard, cloth and chest hair he is complete. I may well tweak some more before the Long Island Show comes along in a few weeks but for the most part I am happy with the outcome. I have to say that the pics don't translate my reds quite the way they look in real life and I am probably going to shoot him in front of a few other different backdrops as an experiment tomorrow.</span></div>

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-umX2ZunHcQc/Ul9GgtFkYxI/AAAAAAAACqk/sVw5zPUcQHA/s1600/Laconian15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-umX2ZunHcQc/Ul9GgtFkYxI/AAAAAAAACqk/sVw5zPUcQHA/s640/Laconian15.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Progress on the helmet, crest, cloth and hair can be seen in the pictures above and below. I have put together a small step by step series of photos (see below) showing the process over the past few days to get to this point. As for the hair on his head and chest, I basically filled out his beard and hair with a coat of Mars Brown and Burnt Umber. The chest hair was created by repeatedly touching the effected area with a worn W&N "Series 7" 000 brush with thinned Burnt Umber in the hairs.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xP1GHgMQFPI/Ul9GmNfGG_I/AAAAAAAACqs/DNS_IzR9fX0/s1600/Laconian17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xP1GHgMQFPI/Ul9GmNfGG_I/AAAAAAAACqs/DNS_IzR9fX0/s400/Laconian17.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FPb62sexRtg/Ul9GpA4LHDI/AAAAAAAACq0/vbWeccAdKvk/s1600/Laconian16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FPb62sexRtg/Ul9GpA4LHDI/AAAAAAAACq0/vbWeccAdKvk/s400/Laconian16.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first step was to block in the color panels using Mars Yellow, Raw Umber and Mars Black.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jkAsX2XXe6I/Ul9GtRFmJjI/AAAAAAAACq8/0Y7LowxF4m0/s1600/Laconian09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jkAsX2XXe6I/Ul9GtRFmJjI/AAAAAAAACq8/0Y7LowxF4m0/s400/Laconian09.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
These areas of solid color were then stippled and blended with an old soft brush to develop transitions in the tonal values.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wOjLwtt35UM/Ul9GvnPLzMI/AAAAAAAACrE/2S6yj18EV0w/s1600/Laconian10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wOjLwtt35UM/Ul9GvnPLzMI/AAAAAAAACrE/2S6yj18EV0w/s400/Laconian10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Orange reflected color was worked into the wet paint as a "reflected" color tone on the helmet (both sides front and right side back).Additionally, a base wash of Cadmium Red Deep, Mars Black and Orange was applied to the crest.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E-5YaBdhWlQ/Ul9GydXqO1I/AAAAAAAACrM/Apu7utuFxWY/s1600/Laconian11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="203" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-E-5YaBdhWlQ/Ul9GydXqO1I/AAAAAAAACrM/Apu7utuFxWY/s400/Laconian11.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mars Yellow and Titanium White were used to begin highlighting and unifying the finish.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l67amSTEzvU/Ul9G22IJBoI/AAAAAAAACrU/yozrRyvyNtc/s1600/Laconian12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l67amSTEzvU/Ul9G22IJBoI/AAAAAAAACrU/yozrRyvyNtc/s400/Laconian12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Titanium White with a touch of Mars Yellow begins the process of reflective highlighting. The helmet still looks to soft but additional highlighting once the helmet is dry will begin to pull it all together. Cadmium Red Light is used to begin to get the red dyed crest to begin going towards a dyed and faded crest from the period.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gznqLPopjUc/Ul9G8bp37CI/AAAAAAAACrc/ozCnQGjwGDA/s1600/Laconian13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gznqLPopjUc/Ul9G8bp37CI/AAAAAAAACrc/ozCnQGjwGDA/s400/Laconian13.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The tunic cloth was highlighted with Cadmium Red Deep mixed with Titanium White. At this point the chest hair had not been started.</div>
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YvNIkObaTQw/Ulc3VcYyWdI/AAAAAAAACps/6ZmLQ0_pZv4/s1600/PegHospBust26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YvNIkObaTQw/Ulc3VcYyWdI/AAAAAAAACps/6ZmLQ0_pZv4/s640/PegHospBust26.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All Done!! So first let's get the name change out of the way. Up to this point the bust was going to be a Hospitaller but in the end he has become a Templar. Fairly straightforward. All the details are completed with the addition of the rope and the helmet strap tail. A bit of touch-up here and there and we are complete. Enjoy!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have to say the challenges with this project were the armor (no metallic paints involved) and the cloak (achieving a worn, faded black).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The face received shadow tones of Brown Madder. This has a slightly redder tone than my usual Burnt Umber. This worked well with the cooler flesh tone I had started with. The highlights are Titanium White with a touch of Cadmium Yellow Deep. The eyes started with a pinkish white base color for the whites with the corneas and pupils picked out in blacks and browns. The hair was started with Burnt Umber and Mars Black. Two layers of color have been applied at this point. A further dark shadow tone will be applied prior to my beginning to highlight and age the hair a bit.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The cloth was started with a coat of Deep Cadmium Red (Extra Deep from the old Liquitex line). areas of dead shadow tones were worked in while still wet with a touch of Mars Black here and there. This is far from the finished color as I will be working more towards a faded earthy red. This will not be a brick red nor a crimson/scarlet, but somewhere in between.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Work proceeds on this bust with the end in sight. I have completed the armor, not a bit of metallic paint to be found on this bust. The leather belt is complete as is the hooded cape. This was a bit of fun as I wanted a faded black cloth with desert dust on it. It started with a brown-black base color over which I added lighter browns and tans to achieve the desired effect. I have begun painting the shield face and have been able to attach that item as shown. All that remains are a few details as well as the rope holding the cape and a bit of trailing strapping on the helmet.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As I said before, I have a lot of projects on the fire these days. This great bust from El Greco was on my want list for quite awhile and after recently purchasing it I put it high on my "to do" list. It has been sitting primed, on my bench for a month so last Sunday night I decided to start on the flesh.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I decided to try broadening my pallet for the basic flesh mid-tones, adding some tonal value changes in the basic mix rather than my standard technique. The flesh started with straight Burnt Sienna but I used, Green, Indigo, Alizarin Crimson and Brownish Madder to modify the warmth and hue of the colors prior to doing my first wet-on-wet blending. So what you see here is the outcome of these mid tones. Next I will tackle shadows and hair base tones as well as the eyes. A friday night project if ever there was one.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My next little Roman project uses two Soldiers kits sculpted by Laruccia. The scene depicts two combatants at the Battle of Strasbourg (Argentoratum) in 357AD. The foot figure is SR49 a Roman Infantry Officer and the mounted figure is SR-63 a Roman Cataphract (Scola Scutariorum Clibanariorum). The setting is just prior to the battle.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Strasbourg was a battle fought between the armies of Caesar Julian and the Alamanni tribal confederation under King Chnodomar in what is known today as Alsace France. The battle was a hard fought but decisive victory for the Roman Army. The Cataphract Cavalry didn't fare well in the battle so our cavalryman's smile will soon be gone.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">This piece is just in it's infancy, especially with so many other projects on the burner (3 busts and two other figures). I am excited about this one though as I haven't completed a mounted figure in quite some time.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The plaid cloak is finished and further detail work done as well. A step by step on this pattern technique is shown below. I am on the home stretch with this figure. A few more details and completion of the architectural feature to be added in the corner of the base. This has changed from my earlier idea of a mile marker which may not have been accurate for the time period, to a watering/drinking trough that will be the subject of my next post.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The plaid pattern is painted in oils and is a earthen toned pattern that was copied from a photo found by my friends over on the MedRom forum site. The red-brown lines were painted first using a mix of Brown Madder, Mars Yellow and Titanium White. Where the lines intersect, pure Brown Madder with a touch of Cad Red Deep was applied. Once dry every other line had a thin Indigo line applied, both vertically and horizontally. Lighter shades of Indigo were applied where the blue lines intersect and the whole was allowed to dry for a few days. A unifying neutral wash of Raw Umber, Mars Black and Burnt Sienna was applied overall to enhance the shadows.</span> </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Summer is a slow time for painting figures, at least for me. With a new dog and work, summer weather slows the time for painting. However I am slowly making progress as can be seen above and below. Most of my work has been on the cloak and various small details of the figure.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nY88RnUOghQ/UhqtNhy32UI/AAAAAAAACkM/btudsBB5S8o/s1600/SPQR39-33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nY88RnUOghQ/UhqtNhy32UI/AAAAAAAACkM/btudsBB5S8o/s400/SPQR39-33.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The photo montage below shows the steps to this point in getting a convincing base tan cloak color as well as the movement on some of the finer details of the gladius scabbard, belts and armor. Now begins the process of creating a woven plaid pattern in the cloth.</span></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2_E2UJI7C0Q/UfmrnzG6GMI/AAAAAAAACik/1oTRiPdU95A/s1600/PegHospBust15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2_E2UJI7C0Q/UfmrnzG6GMI/AAAAAAAACik/1oTRiPdU95A/s640/PegHospBust15.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My focus on this bust has been painting the helmet armor. The kit is obviously resin so I had a few choices for how I wanted to tackle the metal bits. The first choice and least liked for this project was simply working with printer's inks and oil paints. Due to the scale and the large smooth surface I felt that I would never be able to achieve the effect that was desired. Second choice was the use of buffed metalizers which I have used before. This choice would have required my getting the cotton buffing wheel into areas that are partially hidden by the hood, again a poor choice. My last choice and in the end, most challenging artistically was to simply paint the metallic effect in layers of white and black, followed by hints of reflected color.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia;">I started with a Mars Black base, allowed to dry.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pX2_S2saeJ4/UfmrsE4CdBI/AAAAAAAACis/f5sCuw8eBp0/s1600/PegHospBust09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pX2_S2saeJ4/UfmrsE4CdBI/AAAAAAAACis/f5sCuw8eBp0/s400/PegHospBust09.jpg" width="331" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yAE4yInPznw/UfmrufbpFjI/AAAAAAAACi0/FTiqQtgZmSE/s1600/PegHospBust10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yAE4yInPznw/UfmrufbpFjI/AAAAAAAACi0/FTiqQtgZmSE/s400/PegHospBust10.jpg" width="350" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">To this I began applying various shades of grey, blended out to reflect the curved surface of the helm. Each layer was allowed to dry before going on to the next.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oshYDR8mf5k/UfmryI9RN-I/AAAAAAAACi8/datGOqd6T7A/s1600/PegHospBust11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oshYDR8mf5k/UfmryI9RN-I/AAAAAAAACi8/datGOqd6T7A/s400/PegHospBust11.jpg" width="327" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The final highlights are applied with pure Titanium White. This same technique will now be applied to the mail. You can also see a basecoat of Burnt Umber with Mars Black has been applied to the cloak and hood to begin the sun-faded black cloak of our Crusader.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So this is where our Roman friend stands at the moment. I have been plodding along getting the mix right and playing with a few ideas on the figure and felt it was time for an update. How I got to this point is shown below.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-teB3nY9Cc2A/UfmEExVwthI/AAAAAAAACgM/JYWLH0Mk7t0/s1600/SPQR39-28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-teB3nY9Cc2A/UfmEExVwthI/AAAAAAAACgM/JYWLH0Mk7t0/s640/SPQR39-28.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The armor had initially been given a dark wash to bring out the detail. Over this I applied a thin coat of Yellow Ochre to start the brass tones.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6dpk3TXjOxc/UfmEMZaZ1HI/AAAAAAAACgU/TCJATbMZkOg/s1600/SPQR39-20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6dpk3TXjOxc/UfmEMZaZ1HI/AAAAAAAACgU/TCJATbMZkOg/s400/SPQR39-20.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Additionally I began to paint the pants with Mars Yellow highlighted with Titanium White.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zHW-LFeVs8s/UfmEO0NIpYI/AAAAAAAACgc/Tl0JPLjjnCQ/s1600/SPQR39-21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zHW-LFeVs8s/UfmEO0NIpYI/AAAAAAAACgc/Tl0JPLjjnCQ/s400/SPQR39-21.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t1DNJjf4weg/UfmESiB5lcI/AAAAAAAACgk/jqm_NWReJIM/s1600/SPQR39-22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t1DNJjf4weg/UfmESiB5lcI/AAAAAAAACgk/jqm_NWReJIM/s400/SPQR39-22.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Yellow Ochre and Titanium White was then applied to the lower edges of the armor leaves to start bringing out the highlights.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r-HERjcom1k/UfmEYI7rDlI/AAAAAAAACgs/9ULJUvGaSEA/s1600/SPQR39-23.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r-HERjcom1k/UfmEYI7rDlI/AAAAAAAACgs/9ULJUvGaSEA/s400/SPQR39-23.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lqeOz4pnPHI/UfmEcXLSZ5I/AAAAAAAACg0/cmc5wCTOZcY/s1600/SPQR39-24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lqeOz4pnPHI/UfmEcXLSZ5I/AAAAAAAACg0/cmc5wCTOZcY/s400/SPQR39-24.jpg" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Further highlighting with successively lighter shades of Yellow Ochre/Titanium White complete the effect as well as a few thin washes of Burnt Umber and Mars Black where the cloak will drape over the left arm and cover/shade the armor. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A glaze of Burnt Umber was applied to the pants to both create shadows and "dirty" the tone of the fabric. I was troubled by the similarity of the yellow pants and the armor. Mars Yellow and Titanium White with a wee tad of Burnt Umber were applied as highlight tones on the pants. Cadmium Red Deep and Extra Deep was mixed to start the cloth going from torque to torque around his collar.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5vPEcQkftoE/UfmEefGke7I/AAAAAAAACg8/srBEa8LPyE4/s1600/SPQR39-25.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5vPEcQkftoE/UfmEefGke7I/AAAAAAAACg8/srBEa8LPyE4/s400/SPQR39-25.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-njIoorfWAzk/UfmEgvB_IWI/AAAAAAAAChE/o3qEmeHNqbo/s1600/SPQR39-26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-njIoorfWAzk/UfmEgvB_IWI/AAAAAAAAChE/o3qEmeHNqbo/s400/SPQR39-26.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-necTvfPDIoU/UfmEkkNe8uI/AAAAAAAAChM/vuoGKJAhAMU/s1600/SPQR39-27.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-necTvfPDIoU/UfmEkkNe8uI/AAAAAAAAChM/vuoGKJAhAMU/s320/SPQR39-27.jpg" width="280" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Mars Brown was used to begin the armor's leather edging. A wash of Burnt Umber and Mars Black pull out the stitching details. The same mix was applied as a thin wash to the outline of the edges on his pteruges as well. The shoes started as Mars Orange, Mars Yellow and Burnt Sienna with Mars Black shading.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As if I don't have enough irons in the fire I started a few other additional busts as well as Ludendorff so that I would pieces at various stages for my last painting class. This means I have way too many things on my workbench but I also have a lot to keep me busy and complete. All in all a mix of good and bad I guess.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The stages are self explanatory I guess, at least as far as the face goes:</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eSVmCbJpvY0/UdIPbiSLdlI/AAAAAAAACdE/GNem9vBADmM/s576/PegHospBust01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eSVmCbJpvY0/UdIPbiSLdlI/AAAAAAAACdE/GNem9vBADmM/s320/PegHospBust01.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ATmrjiTsIwc/UdIPeK3PTtI/AAAAAAAACdM/gOHKhjBsxn0/s504/PegHospBust02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ATmrjiTsIwc/UdIPeK3PTtI/AAAAAAAACdM/gOHKhjBsxn0/s320/PegHospBust02.jpg" width="261" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Y4C-x1G4rc/UdIPj6PokMI/AAAAAAAACdc/8VD70vTrUKo/s504/PegHospBust06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_Y4C-x1G4rc/UdIPj6PokMI/AAAAAAAACdc/8VD70vTrUKo/s320/PegHospBust06.jpg" width="236" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The face was painted separately and then placed inside the hood once I got far enough along. The hood would have inhibited my brush work and the assembly is clean and easy.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The hood is black but cloth dyed as such would fade brown so I am working the basic undertones with mixtures of Burnt Umber and Mars Black to get the warm tones that I will eventually weather. I needed to paint the inside of the hood and the back of the bust where the shield attaches first so that assembly can continue.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I recently held one of my little figure painting classes at our local hobby shop "Section 8 Hobbies" here in Buffalo and as part of my demo I began painting this bust from Ulrich Puchala's line of portrait busts. I have been meaning to start on this for some time and this was the perfect opportunity.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As always a mix of Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Deep and W&N Permanent Red, with a touch of Yellow Ochre was made to start the flesh process. This is applied liberally to the face and hairline and the excess removed leaving a "stain" of the mixture on the white basecoat. Over this I began working my mid-tone highlights (Cadmium Yellow Deep and Titanium White) to begin blocking out the face. Shadows under the chin and around the eyes were started by stippling Indigo into the areas that require darkening. This indicates shadowing in the areas of facial hair growth as well as greying out the skin around his eyes. The results are in the first photos below.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5yJJzf5PmVA/UdCGUT8tSvI/AAAAAAAACcc/R7hdnJmP4wc/s637/Ludendorff04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5yJJzf5PmVA/UdCGUT8tSvI/AAAAAAAACcc/R7hdnJmP4wc/s320/Ludendorff04.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">After this had dried I began deepening the shadows using Burnt Umber and Brown Madder glazes along with a tiny touch of Alizarin Crimson in the cheeks. The Burnt Umber was also worked into the hair.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hQ7406CeKxU/UdCGYmMXwSI/AAAAAAAACck/YijN6A0oyPs/s643/Ludendorff05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hQ7406CeKxU/UdCGYmMXwSI/AAAAAAAACck/YijN6A0oyPs/s320/Ludendorff05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Further highlighting is done using glazes of Titanium White with a small amount of Cadmium Yellow Deep. These glazes both brighten the highlights and tone down the warmer tones of the base colors. The eyes were also started at this point. A mix of Titanium White, Mars Black and Burnt Umber was applied to the hair with each coat being made lighter by the white. This is applied in small lines, building texture and random highlighting.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4NMHhgz9-i4/UdCGcStLp9I/AAAAAAAACcs/ZcypsJQZREw/s662/Ludendorff06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="174" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4NMHhgz9-i4/UdCGcStLp9I/AAAAAAAACcs/ZcypsJQZREw/s320/Ludendorff06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The eyes are completed as well as further highlighting of the folds around his eyes. I also pulled back some of the whiter hairs in his moustache and eyebrows as he hadn't gone that far grey by the time of this portrait. Painting the uniform and Cap will help me to see if any further work needs to be done to get the desired flesh tones where I want them.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As always, once dry, highlight tones are added using a glaze of Titanium White and Cad Yellow Deep. Cadmium Red Deep with hints of Mars Black were applied to the base of the feathers and pure Cad Red Deep was applied to the remainder of the feathers. This provides the base tones over which the texture can be created with lighter tones of red.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wonzd1fcFTw/UbeaF1NQrDI/AAAAAAAACbs/-59j1fnG67s/s1600/SPQR39-15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wonzd1fcFTw/UbeaF1NQrDI/AAAAAAAACbs/-59j1fnG67s/s400/SPQR39-15.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nXBq-e1DWgU/UbeaKuLq1LI/AAAAAAAACb0/S2o2Ee4i09U/s1600/SPQR39-16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nXBq-e1DWgU/UbeaKuLq1LI/AAAAAAAACb0/S2o2Ee4i09U/s400/SPQR39-16.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A glaze of Mars Black was applied to the stonework and quickly wiped off with a bit of paper towel. This creates shadow tones, allows the warmer brown tones to show through and the rough texture of the paper towel creates a more natural appearance by also removing some of the brown paint in spots.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Further shadow and highlight work remains to be done as deeper shadows will be applied in a few spots with Brownish Madder. A bit of Burnt Umber and Alizarin Crimson was applied to the lips and highlighted with white.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The leather padding of the cheek-guards was outlined with Brownish Madder and deeper shadows applied. Additionally, black washes were applied to the medals on his phalarae and an initial shadow tone for the scale armor (also Brownish Madder).</span></div>
